    Dear Member,

UPDATE ON KWS PARK FEES FROM 1ST JULY, 2022

Further to our Member Circular dated 17th March, 2022 Ref: KATO/CIRCULAR/MAR-22/4 communicating the revised Park Fees from 1st July, 2022, we received a number of concerns forwarded by members which were all compiled and forwarded to KWS.

The KATO Executive Committee held a meeting with Tourism and Wildlife CS on Tuesday 29th March where several issues related to tourism were discussed.

Amongst the key issues raised was the July 2022 Park Fee increase and the concerns from the industry. A request was made that implementation be pushed to January 2023.

The CS however pointed out that: –

    1. KWS was the only entity that slashed park fees by 50% for over two years when the pandemic struck.
    2. The concession was extended for a further six months to June 2022.
    3. During this time KWS operations were occasioning an operational deficit that had to be financed by the Government.  The deficit cannot be carried forward much longer and KWS needs to be as self-sustaining as possible.
    4. The increase was very nominal and the newly introduced “low season rates” were also very attractive.

The CS concluded by saying the new KWS rates w.e.f July 2022 were already gazetted and the industry should work with them and support KWS in its efforts to provide and maintain a quality product.

    Kind regards,

    Fred Kaigua, ACIArb, CPM
